How to Clean a Front-Load Washer and Stop the Smell

Front-load washers trap moisture in the door gasket and smell musty. Here's how to clean the gasket, dispenser, and drain filter — and stop the odor for good.

3 min read

Front-load washers clean clothes beautifully and use less water — but their design traps moisture in the door gasket, which leads to that classic musty smell. Here's how to clean a front-load washer thoroughly and keep the odor away.

Why front-loaders smell

The rubber door gasket holds a little water after every wash, and detergent/softener residue feeds mildew. Add a door that seals tightly when closed, and the drum never dries out. The fix is cleaning the spots a normal wash never reaches.

Step 1: Clean the door gasket

This is where 90% of the odor lives.

  • Pull back the folds of the rubber gasket and wipe out trapped water, hair, coins, and gunk.
  • Use a cloth with a mild cleaner or a 50/50 vinegar-water mix. Dry it when done.

Step 2: Clean the detergent dispenser

Pull out the dispenser drawer, rinse off crusted detergent and softener, scrub the compartments, and wipe the cavity before sliding it back.

Step 3: Run a tub-clean cycle

  • Use the washer's Tub Clean / Clean Washer cycle (or the hottest cycle) with the drum empty.
  • Add a washer-cleaning tablet or 2 cups of white vinegar. For a deeper clean, follow with a cycle using ½ cup of baking soda.

Step 4: Clean the drain pump filter

Most front-loaders have a drain pump filter behind a small panel at the bottom front:

  • Lay down a towel and have a shallow pan ready — water will drain out.
  • Unscrew/twist out the filter, remove trapped lint, coins, and debris, rinse, and reinstall snugly.

A clogged filter causes odor and drainage problems, so don't skip it.

Step 5: Keep it fresh

  • Leave the door and dispenser drawer open between washes so the drum dries.
  • Wipe the gasket after heavy or hot loads.
  • Use the correct amount of HE detergent — excess suds leave residue.
  • Run a tub-clean cycle monthly.

Still smells or won't drain?

If odor lingers or the washer won't drain after cleaning the filter, the pump or drain hose may be failing. True Appliance Repair connects you with same-day technicians for Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, and more. Call 1-888-298-3714.
